Kurt Cobain Rises From The Dead… In ‘Guitar Hero 5′

It’s official: Nothing is sacred.

On Thursday, Activision, the makers of Guitar Hero, made a huge announcement: In their new game “Guitar Hero 5” (coming out September 1st), one of the playable characters is… Kurt Cobain. Two Nirvana songs will also be in the game: “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Lithium.”

According to Tim Riley, Activision’s Vice President of Music Affairs, this move to squeeze even more dollars out of the already-grossly exploited memory of Kurt Cobain was really a group effort. Courtney Love had to sign off on it, as did (Nirvana’s drummer) Dave Grohl and Universal Publishing. “There’s a lot of moving parts to something like this, but it was about timing … after three years of working with the different parties, it was like the perfect storm.”

Courtney Love’s main concern wasn’t, of course, preserving her husband’s legacy. No, it was making sure he wasn’t fat. Riley says, “Courtney supplied us with photos and videos and knew exactly what she wanted Kurt to look like … she certainly had a physical image in mind. She wanted him to have that sort of athletic definition but not overly so.”

Yep, that’s exactly what she should be worried about. If there’s a virtual Courtney Love in the game, we’re kinda hoping the virtual Kurt has an unlockable virtual shotgun, so he can put himself out of his not-so-virtual misery.
