Everybody knows that Jesus Christ Superstar is the greatest musical of all time, besides these 10 Superhero Musicals. And like all good things in the world, Hollywood is going to remake it.
But if it was up to us at Comedy.com, we’d make the new cast awesome. So here is our dream cast for the remake of Jesus Christ Superstar (ignoring the fact that most of them probably cannot sing). Hopefully, some faceless executive will see this list and take not.
And, Hollywood, please don’t remake the Frogger Musical.
Jack Black as King Herod
Josh Mostel gave a hilarious performance as the eccentric King Herod.
This is the role Jack Black has been preparing for his whole life. The role would require singing, prancing, and being blatantly gay.
Will Smith as Simon Zealots
In the original, Larry Marshall was the hippest cat in the movie who got the trippiest dance sequence.
We think it’s time for Will Smith to get back to his roots.

Gerard Butler as Caiaphas
Caiaphas, played by Bob Bingham is probably the true villain of the movie. You can tell by the giant black hat.
It was actually rumored that Gerard Butler would play Pilate but he would be way better as Caiaphas.
Ed Helms as Annas
Annas, played by Kurt Yaghjian, was Caiaphas’s bumbling sidekick.
This sounds like a job for Ed Helms who is probably thinking about which roles he should take as to not be typecast.
Alan Rickman as Pontius Pilate
Barry Dennen was perfect in this role as the strong yet completely insecure leader.
Are we crazy or does Alan Rickman look exactly the part?
Anne Hathaway as Mary Magdalene
Yvonne Elliman played Jesus’s heartbroken love interest.
We think Anne Hathaway is a great actress, especially because of her performance in Rachel Getting Married. And, yes, we would love to see her play a hooker.
Robert Downey Jr as Jesus H. Christ
Ted Neeley is a tough guy to beat as Jesus.
But if anyone can do it, it’s Robert Downey Jr. This is a risky choice since RDJ is so overly exposed right now, but he gives a great performance in anything he’s in.
Philip Seymour Hoffman as Judas Iscariot
Carl Anderson played Judas, the actual main character in Jesus Christ Superstar.
This was a tough choice and we suspect a lot of our readers will disapprove but we went with Philip Seymour Hoffman. Who else in the modern acting scene can pull off doing such an unforgivable task while making himself so sympathetic and relatable? For Christ’s sake, PSH made Mission Impossible 3 great.
Bonus: The greatest parody of Jesus Christ Superstar, from Mr. Show. Enjoy Jeepers Creepers Semi-Star starring Jack Black.
If you agree or disagree with any of these choices, drop us a comment. And be sure to check out Harry Potter: The Musical.
